4G FDD and TDD LTE Bands & Frequencies Australia

Australian Band Summary

2G bands:

900Mhz – Vodafone, Telstra & Optus
1800Mhz (Vodafone, Optus & Telstra all utilize this band for 4G instead)

3G bands:

850MHz (B5) – Vodafone, Telstra
900MHz (B8) – Vodafone, Optus –
2100MHz (B1) – Vodafone, Optus, Telstra

4G bands:

Australia is presently operating these LTE bands
2100Mhz – Vodafone, Optus (Tasmania), Telstra (a handful of sites)
1800Mhz – Vodafone, Optus, Telstra
900Mhz – Telstra (a minority of sites, employs spectrum formerly used by 2G)
2300Mhz – Optus (Brilliant wireless spectrum)
700Mhz – Optus, Telstra
850Mhz – Vodafone

Please note the 2300mhz mentioned above is just for Vivid and is just available in some of the Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra metro areas. I.e. not in NBN fixed wireless areas.

2G

The 2G, 2nd generation phones, use either the CDMA codec or GSM codec. The CDMA in Australia (Orange, Telstra) was on the 850 MHz frequency which is now used for 3G. Majority of new phones come with quad-band GSM support. A quad band GSM phone supports 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz.

2G is an old technology and gives a fallback position when 4G and 3G coverage is not available.

Australian 2G bands:

900MHz – Optus, Vodafone & Telstra
1800MHz – Vodafone, Telstra & Optus (also used for 4G)
Telstra plan to turn off all 2G 900 by the end of 2016 to make the spectrum accessible for 4G.

3G

There are many 3G networks functioning in Australia. 3G frequencies are normally specified as HSDPA/UMTS or WCDMA codecs on the phone specifications.

Australian 3G bands:

850MHz (B5) – Telstra
900MHz (B8) – Vodafone, Optus – available in most of the metro areas on Optus, with both Vodafone and Optus re-farming the 2G-900 spectrum in local and rural areas
2100MHz (B1) – Vodafone, Optus, Telstra

4G

700MHz (B28) FDD (0000000008000000) – Optus, Telstra. (Switched on initially in a couple of cities, should be widespread now)
2300MHz (B40) TDD (0000008000000000) – Optus (the Vivid wireless spectrum), NBN
3500MHz (B42) TDD (????????????????) – Optus, NBN (trials at this phase)
