Introduction
Mobile phones have become an integral part of our life. It would be very difficult to imagine our life without this electronic device. Mobile phones provide ways to stay connected to your loved ones even though the physical distance might have increased. Since the last few decades, mobile phones have seen revolutionary changes in its design, specification, features, appeal, and usage. So much has changed about these devices that it would be difficult to keep track of these developments. One of the most promising things about this change is the camera quality. The way the camera’s and its features have changed across various mobile devices is very astonishing.
Today the cameras of a phone have become a lot better with improved specifications. They give a run for the money to some of the dedicated digital cameras out there. Interestingly, smartphone companies have started rolling out phones with 200 MP cameras, which may sound unreal at first but it isn’t. They promise never seen before picture quality. In fact Motorola has successfully rolled out its 200mp phone just last month for the world to see and experience much greater clarity. Here in this article we dive deep into these special mobile devices and provide you with the nitty gritties of the working of such phones.
Does a 200 MP camera affects camera quality?
It is always believed that the greater the MP of the smartphone camera, the greater is its picture quality. However, the overall image quality that a camera is capable of is not entirely determined by the impressive megapixel count it has. The camera quality is ultimately decided by its sensors and not the megapixel count. The megapixel count actually determines the amount of detail a camera’s sensor would be able to theoretically collect and give out an image with much greater clarity.
So, if a phone with a 200 MP camera doesn’t have an equivalent sensor to match it, it may not make much difference in quality of the photo as compared to the camera with lower megapixel count. In order to fit more pixels to add greater detail, their sizes need to be shrinked which would affect the quality ultimately. So, the tradeoff always remains. However, a few companies have been working on how to shrink this size without compromising the quality.
How the Smartphone camera sensor is able to click 200MP picture
Attempts have been made by many companies to build a 200mp camera into a smartphone. Samsung’s ISOCELL HP3 is the camera sensor which has the smallest pixels that the company has fitted on a sensor to date. This sensor is not yet available commercially on any phones. It features 0.56-micron pixels, which allows the company to produce a smaller 1/1.4 inch camera sensor format. This smaller sensor takes up less space which allows the manufacturers to keep the models slim. In order to drive home the point that this camera would bring out details like never before, Samsung actually printed a cat’s photo in a giant canvas which was bigger than a basketball court.
These sensors come with a few software tweaks to improve the results. One of them is the Tetra Square pixel-binning technology that merges 16 adjacent pixels to create a super pixel which is capable of absorbing more light to produce more detailed and brighter pictures. The first stage involves merging four 0.56 micron pixels using an algorithm to create a super large pixel of 1.12 micron size while giving out a 50mp image. Then, in the next step, a 2 * 2 arrays of four 1.12 micron super pixels are combined to create 2.24 micron size to produce a 12.5 MP picture. The end results are very stunning and with greater detail to keep you in awe.
Smartphones with 200MP camera in 2022-23
There were many rumors surrounding Motorola related to its launch of the world’s first 200MP camera phone. Motorola through its launch of Motorola Edge 30 became the first company to launch a 200mp camera phone worldwide. Other smartphones that are expected to sport a 200mp camera are Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G, Nokia N73 5G, Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Explorer, Honor 80 Pro Plus, Motorola Frontier 22 5G, Xiaomi Redmi K50s Pro 5G, Nokia X60 Pro 5G, Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition, Samsung Galaxy Note 30 Ultra 5G etc. These are some of the models that are expected. Looking at so many companies dabbling into this space and Motorola able to finally launch one, it appears that a smartphone camera is about to see revolutionary technology in near future. Users and the tech industry are excited at this new development and all eyes are set on the companies who have their expected launch in the coming year.
