Why is this happening?
While big names like Telstra is set to repurpose the 3G network, meaning you'll need a 4G device with VoLTE (HD Calling) capability to stay connected. This change will upgrade the 4G network and facilitate capacity, speed, and reliability expansion for 5G. This transition is designed to deliver improved connectivity and access to faster, low-latency communication across Australia.
What devices are affected?
3G-only devices, 4G non VoLTE devices, and 3G-only Internet of Things (IOT) or Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices such as smart meters and sensors, will lose all or part of their connectivity after the end of June 2024.
3G OnlyDevices operating solely on 3G will lose network connectivity and won't be able to make calls or use data. |
4G non VoLTE4G devices without VoLTE (Voice over LTE) will continue to use data but will no longer be able to make calls. |
IOT or M2MBe sure to check as 3G-only Internet of Things and Machine to Machine devices will stop sending data. |
What do I need to do?
If you're using a SIM in a device that will be impacted by the 3G network closure, it's essential to switch to a 4G device for continued service (VoLTE-compatible if voice calls are a requirement). We recommend upgrading at your earliest convenience. While we will reach out to customers using affected devices over time, taking early action is advisable.
We recommend replacing affected devices now, well ahead of the closure date.
FAQs
4G non-VoLTE refers to 4G LTE devices that do not support Voice over LTE technology, meaning voice calls are made over 2G or 3G networks instead of 4G.
Check your device’s settings under “About Phone” or “Network,” the manufacturer’s website, or the device’s packaging for network compatibility details.
3G networks are shutting down to repurpose spectrum and resources towards more advanced technologies like 4G LTE and 5G, supporting better connectivity and faster internet speeds.
If your device is 4G capable and supports VoLTE, you're likely not directly impacted by the 3G shutdown. However, ensure your device supports VoLTE for uninterrupted services.
Some newer devices may require a SIM card that supports 4G or 5G networks. Check with your carrier to confirm if a new SIM card is needed.
When purchasing a new device, verify the specifications to ensure it supports 4G LTE networks. Look for terms like "4G LTE" or "4G VoLTE" in the device’s network compatibility section.
If your device relies solely on 3G for voice and data, it will be affected by the shutdown. Upgrading to a device that supports 4G VoLTE or 5G is recommended to maintain service connectivity.
If you currently use a 3G-only device, consider upgrading to a 4G VoLTE or 5G device to continue using voice and data services without interruption. Check with your carrier for any specific actions or offers related to the transition.
Devices that are 3G-only will lose the ability to make or receive calls and use data over the cellular network once 3G services are discontinued. Devices that are 4G capable, especially those with VoLTE, will continue to work as they use the 4G network for both data and voice services.
