Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra - Did Flagships get worthy upgrades?
- 28 Aug, 2023
Introduction
The process of launching budget and midrange series smartphones are quite similar. They launch new models with very minute details but these days this trend has been passed on to the new premium smartphones as well. So here we are going to investigate what has really changed in Samsung Galaxy S23 in comparison to Galaxy S22 and by the end of this blog, you will be able to understand whether it is really worth getting the S23 or saving some dollars and settling with the last year’s champion Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra an exact copy of the Samsung S22 Ultra?
The first thing that we see in a newer model smartphone is its design and this time Samsung has taken the inspiration from their rival Apple by reusing the last year’s design. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra looks exactly like Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra but still, there are minor differences. First, the Samsung S23 ultra is less curvy than the S22 ultra which gives it a more boxy modern design and as far as the dimensions are concerned they are exactly the same i.e. 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 mm but the S23 ultra is slightly heavy. The camera rings of the Samsung Galaxy S23 are also bigger and the S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra won’t be able to share cases. Using last year’s design is not a major loophole as the s22 ultra design seems still relevant in 2023. As we were talking about what’s new in the S23 ultra design, the brand has added gorilla glass victus 2 protection which promises to protect the smartphone on concrete and hard surfaces. With the S23 ultra, we get two more colour options lavender and cream which weren’t present with the S22 series.
Samsung S22 Ultra display is ideal in 2023
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra display was very advanced for 2022 and that’s the reason Samsung used the same display with minor upgrades in S23 Ultra. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts 6.8 inches of Dynamic AMOLED 2X with 1750 nits of peak brightness and 1440 x 3088 pixels of resolution which is the best display in the smartphone world. Let’s talk about what’s new in the Samsung S23 Ultra display in comparison with the display of the S22 Ultra. S23 ultra display is an LTPO panel that switches from 1Hz to 120Hz according to the user requirement which in return saves a lot of battery life. The protection on the display also got upgraded to Gorilla glass victus 2.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra performance is way better than the S22 ultra
Earlier in this blog, we weren’t able to distinguish the S23 ultra upgrades from its predecessor but the performance section is the department where Samsung has made major improvements. Samsung has packed a 4nm chipset ‘snapdragon 8 gen 2’ for Galaxy which has some exclusive clock speed settings for the S23 series. In our review, the Samsung Galaxy S23 ultra comes very close to the best-performing iPhone 14 Pro Max offering a jitter experience on heavy games like Pubg mobile and genshin Impact. The antutu benchmark scoring of the S23 Ultra is 1,226,598 which is a very impressive number as it surpassed the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Snapdragon 8 gen 2 is an efficient performer which leads to lesser power consumption. Samsung S22 Ultra was launched with two chipset options for European and Asian countries, brand provided its own Exynos 2200 and for the rest of the world they packed Snapdragon 8 gen 1 which was known for its throttling issues.
Camera Comparison - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra carries the same camera set-up from the last year which includes a primary lens, ultra-wide lens, 3X telephoto lens and 10X Periscope lens. First, let’s talk about what is the same in both gen smartphones. Samsung has packed the same 12 MP ultra-wide camera sensor which captures 120 degrees of wide view, in our camera comparison, we found out the outcome of the S22 ultra and the S23 ultra, Ultra-wide camera samples were quite similar. In perfect light conditions, we weren’t able to tell the difference between the wide camera shots but in low light conditions, the ultra-wide lens of S23 ultra captures a bit more detail. The same story followed through the 10MP 10X periscope zoom lens and 10 MP 3X Telephoto lens as the outcomes of both smartphones were very similar.
Now let’s straight jump to the Samsung S23 Ultra primary 200MP camera which is capable of capturing sharper pictures and great dynamic range. In our comparison, the pictures of the S23 ultra had better details than the S22 ultra 100MP primary camera and over time with software upgrades S23 ultra camera will become more better. In our opinion, the main difference lies in the video output of the two. Samsung S23 Ultra records better quality video with enhanced 8K video recording, providing better stabilization in 4k video recording which makes the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra the best Android smartphone for videography.
Battery and charging - S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra
As we are writing this blog we noticed that there are only a few upgrades in the S23 Ultra over the S22 Ultra but these few upgrades play a major role. Sadly the charging speed of the Samsung S23 Ultra hasn’t changed when you directly compare it with its predecessor as it supports 45watt wired charging, 25-watt wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging with no charger inside the box. S23 Ultra comes with the same 5000 mah battery that was used in the S22 Ultra last year but the battery efficiency of the S23 Ultra gradually increases all thanks to the collaboration of an LTPO display, snapdragon 8 gen 2 processor.
Conclusion
Now we have to answer these two main questions Do you need to upgrade to S23 Ultra if you own an S22 Ultra? And which smartphone among the two you should consider in 2023? First, come first if you own an S22 Ultra today then you don’t need to upgrade to the S23 Ultra as the difference between the two spec sheet-wise is not that vast so waiting for an S24 Ultra could be a better choice. But if you have to choose between the two then it depends on your use case. If you want to have a smartphone that will support you for more upcoming years and perform better with greater efficiency then you should look for the new S23 Ultra but if you need to buy a Samsung flagship smartphone and save some dollars as you can get a Samsung S22 ultra under $1200 Aud.
