Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G release date leaked by Google
- 26 Aug, 2020
Google will be unveiling two phones in 2020: Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. The official launch date of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G has been accidentally leaked. They were revealed in an official blog confirming that the pre-orders will commence from October. The screenshot, taken by the readers states that “The Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 will be available to pre-order from 8th October 2020”.
The tech giant has for years tried to contain the leaks but now it does things a little differently by showing us the glimpses of products ahead of their full unveiling. Even so, it does not appear to have been part of the plan to reveal the pre-order date for its upcoming smartphones. However, assuming the date to be true, the devices will be close to the iPhone 12’s expected release date.
We are expecting Google to not just reveal the two Pixel phones at the event if go by the previous years ‘Made by Google’ events. They are likely to show the latest changes to the Assistant as well as the new smart home and audio products. Having said this, Google is yet to officially confirm anything as of now, but we are sure that Google will launch Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G this year.
Pixel 4a 5G: Specifications, Design, and Features
The 5G variant is expected to look very similar to the original model. There could be subtle differences in the weight or total size, but the major details are expected to be similar to Pixel 4a. The potential features include a punch-hole display on the front, fingerprint scanner on the back, colour-contrasting power button, and more.
The Pixel 4a uses FHD 5.81-inch display, giving a good mix of brightness, colour vividness and accuracy and we can expect the same panel on 4a 5G or maybe something a little larger. In terms of camera, we are likely to get the same 12.2MP rear camera and 8MP front camera found on Pixel 4a, but that’s not bad as Google’s photo software is fantastic. However, there are a few rumours about an extra camera on the back of the 5G variant so we have to wait for the official details.
Moving forward, to give the Pixel 4a the ability to use 5G, Goggle will have to make some changes to give the performance boost. We can expect something like the Snapdragon 756G, which has a built-in 5G modem. This could also mean more RAM and storage capacity. The Pixel 4a contains a 3,140mAh battery which can charge up to 18W via a wired USB-C connection, but since the results are disappointing, it would be great if the tech giant could slip in a larger battery.
Lastly, the only other potential change we can expect is if Google decides to roll out another unique colour option on the 5G variant. Pixel 4a has an only Black option, but Google normally options three options, one of them could be white.
Pixel 5: Specifications, Design, and Features
We have been able to see only a few leaked images which show Pixel 5 where it is looking to have a brushed aluminium frame and a camera housing in the top-left corner of the rear. With the exception of centring the camera module and taking it all the way top to the frame, this isn’t a big jump from Pixel 4. It is rumoured that Pixel 5 prototype has a forehead bezel like the Pixel 4.
Rumours of the display have also emerged saying that the new flagship will likely offer an OLED panel with the full-HD resolution, with a larger refresh rate. It is expected to be approximately 6.67 inches, making it the largest phone Google has ever launched. In terms of cameras, we might see a wide-angle lens which was missing in Pixel 4. Beyond the basic focal lengths, there are no rumours on the precise specifications on the camera for the phone.
Since we have seen the previous Pixel models to feature the best Qualcomm chip, we can expect the Snapdragon 865 or Snapdragon 865 Plus in Pixel 5. If Google doesn’t choose the high-end processor, it will not be able to challenge the upcoming iPhone in the speed tests. RAM has been a weak point of Pixel series, but we hope that Google at least raises it to 8GB. Lastly, there are no rumours of the size of the battery yet. The battery size and life of the Pixel 4 were disappointing so Google might add improve on this too.
Outlook
The safest assumption to make about the next Pixel is that it will be the first new phone to ship the latest version of Android. Android 11 is available as a public beta, and we can expect it to come with Pixel 5. The likely features are new permission controls, improvements in messaging, 5G, media player widget, and more.
What we can say is that for users wanting great software and photography at a price for mid-range and flagship phones, both Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 could fit perfectly in this realm, though we still have a lot to find about the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. So, stay tuned to find out the latest updates and announcements on what Google will deliver in its new devices.
